Environmental Services

Due to the climate crisis, thinking about how buildings perform and understanding their whole life environmental impact is increasingly important to us and our clients. At a national level government and local authorities are also applying ever more stringent ‘green’ regulations which designers needs to be able to respond to.

At Nash Baker, we believe in environmentally conscious design and value its role in building a greener, more sustainable future. As a practice, we not only ensure your home responds to the statutory requirements concerning environmental performance, we are able to take our designs a step further; utilising our in-house expertise and software to unlock your building’s full potential.

We consider various factors in our design process, such as understanding how the orientation of your home impacts solar heat gains and how the placement and size of windows impacts the quality of natural light. These seemingly small considerations can significantly influence how you experience and use your house, ultimately leading to more comfortable homes and reduced long-term operating costs.

Here is how we apply our expertise and tools during our design process:

  1. Understanding Your Surroundings (Site analysis): We carefully examine how your building interacts with its surroundings. This involves analysing the overall site layout and considering environmental factors such as daylight, sunlight, wind, and site specific weather conditions.

  2. Creating a Comfortable Interior: We work on the internal layout by using simulations to find the right balance of natural light, ventilation, and humidity. This helps determine optimal design of windows and openings to ensure your space is well-lit and ventilated without resulting in uncomfortable overheating, humidity or glare.

  3. Ensuring Energy Efficiency: We conduct initial studies to identify factors influencing your building's performance, such as heat loss or gain. This information guides us in making your property as energy-efficient as practically possible.

  4. Harnessing Renewable Energy: Our goal is to optimise the use of renewable energy for your property. We analyse the potential output and recommend the most suitable applications to enhance energy efficiency.

Once we're confident that your building is optimized for its surroundings, we work closely with mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers to fine-tune technical details and performance specifications for your home to ensure a successful integration of the proposals.

CASE STUDY - BROMPTON SQUARE

This handsome property is part of a square of Grade II Listed townhouses in Knightsbridge. Constructed between 1821 and 1835, and once home to social reformer Francis Place.

This project included cutting-edge sustainable technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of the house. All these measures were carefully and discreetly integrated within the historic fabric of the building and are their presence is scarcely visible, or noticeable.

MEET OUR ENVIROMENTAL DESIGNER

Having completed an MSc in Architecture and Environmental Design, Przemek Piotrowicz drives the sustainable design within the practice. Nominated for the Hilson Moran Award during his studies for the Best Design Idea evoking around energy efficiency improvement and renewable energy integration within the London housing stock, he carries the necessary skills in understanding building performance and the application of the most efficient initiatives.
