Pump Street Bakery

Transforming a brewery into a bakery at the heart of this Suffolk village.

The Pump Street Bakery in Orford, Suffolk was designed to provide a shop with plenty of space for the client’s freshly baked bread to be displayed every morning whilst also creating a contemporary eating space for visitors and locals to sample the cafe's local seasonal food.

As a Grade II listed building in the heart of this coastal village, the challenge was how to restore but also update what had previously been an old brewery transforming it into a modern bakery, shop, and cafe whilst incorporating a flat on the first floor. This process involved extensive negotiations with locals, council officials, specialists and of course the clients.

Unusual features of the project included re-constructing the original chimney (a structural challenge in itself) to meet the requirement for substantial mechanical ventilation from the kitchen.
